To apply for and be eligible to hold the Automated Examination Specialist designation, an examiner must fulfill the following requirements:

- Achievement of, at least, the status of Accredited Financial Examiner (AFE) with the Society of Financial Examiners.
or;
- Completion, with a passing grade, of AFE1 and AFE2.

- Completion, with a passing grade, of four insurance-related courses offered by the Insurance Data Management Association, Inc. You may contact IDMA offices at 85 John St., New York, NY 10038, phone (212) 558-2130, fax (212) 558-2141. IDMA tests cost $650 each for non-members plus $100 in other fees; however, membership is $250 annually for government employees and testing is $200 per exam for members. The purchase of textbooks is also significantly less expensive for IDMA members. Exams are given twice a year, in late January/early February and in late June. The four courses are:
* IDMA 1 - Insurance Data Collection and Statistical Reporting
* IDMA 2 - Insurance Data Quality
* IDMA 3 - Systems Development and Project Management
* IDMA 4 - Data Management, Administration, and Warehousing

- Completion, with a passing grade, of two IDMA exams and the CISA exam offered by the Information Systems Audit & Control Association (ISACA), the international organization for EDP auditors. They may be contracted at www.ISACA.org or 847/253-1545. The CISA exam is given once a year in June. The cost of annual membership is $110 plus a $30 new member fee. There are two textbooks that can be ordered through ISACA.

- Completion, with a passing grade, of the CISA exam and two years full time experience equivalent as an information systems auditor participating in the examination process which two years may be cumulative; the two years experience requirement to be certified by the applicant’s chief examiner in the state of employment.
Note that options A and B above are only available to individuals who, prior to January 1, 2001, have taken or registered to taken an IDMA exam.
- Completion, with a passing grade, of the System Proficiency Exam administered by the NAIC. This exam tests knowledge of the usage of ACL and general knowledge of the NAIC's Information Systems Questionnaire. Interested parties should contact Natalee Droge at ndroge@naic.org
- Be an insurance department employee or self-employed with a contract for services directly with an insurance department; and
- Be approved by the Admissions Committee of the Society of Financial Examiners as meeting all the requirements to be eligible to hold the designation, including payment of application fee as indicated below.
